Like any newborn, this one carries the DNA of its ancestors, stretching back to the First Drum. Back to a time when we first sounded our longing for a connection with something greater than ourselves, that moment we can still experience when we enter into the rhythm of All That Is. It is the timeless promise of healing through service, of dancing into the Mystery, of finally joining into the lasting bond between Earth and Sky.
Features
- Genuine Sassafras Drum Body
- Approx. 9-inches round (though you can see it is slightly oval) and about 4 ½-inches high
- Goat skin drum head w/rawhide lacing
- Four Sacred Attachments
The “Elfin Angel” Carving (redwood):
Mounted on a round wooden disc which is affixed against a section of
intact sassafras bark on the drum. The figure is attached with copper
wire as shoulder amulets and connected to an emerald chip “heart.”

Genuine Hickory Nut:
This small yet powerful symbol of manifestation is affixed to a length
of leather cord and tied onto the drum with round leather lacing.
Smoky Crystal:
The beautiful crystal is embedded into a piece of lightning-struck
cherry wood and flanked by a copper wire with emerald chips at each
end. A small space is provided behind the crystal to add sacred herbs
before using the drum for ceremony.
Apple Moons: Two cross sections of an apple branch are joined by black leather cord and French brass beads.

- Beater is made from apple wood wrapped with natural round leather cord, white deer skin lacing and suede top. Two small bells add a beautiful little chime sound each time the beater strikes the drum.

combination) pecks with its beak and flaps it wings when drum is
struck. Approx. 4 3/4-inches high x 1 1/2-inches wide
A Dragon (made of rare American chestnut, lightning-struck cherry, and pine woods), glass eyes wobble
when drum is struck. Fire color is from cranberry juice & pigment.
Approx. 5 1/2-inches x 2 1/2-inches
A Fishing Boat with dangling fish (made of pine wood, with copper and glass eyes), approx. 6-inches x 9-inches, fish jiggle when drum is struck
A hammered 1 1/2-inch square SOLID Brass Medallion with engraved “Royal Symbol”:
Celtic Ogham alphabet letters for “Live Free” form the outline of an
oak tree and encase a stag’s head, bird of prey and the sun. Stars and
the moon orbit in the periphery. Secured by a braid of hand-spun wool
and hemp.
Three 2-inch strands of drilled gemstone quality emeralds are suspended by copper onto 1 1/4-inches apple wood circles affixed at three places around the rim.

The Sun King Drum Ensemble
The Drum
- Apparent Lightning-Struck Hickory Drum (see "About Lightning-Struck" here for more about this.)
- 10" drum head (approx. diameter, as trees don't grow in perfect circles!)
- Inlaid hand-dyed leather band with hand-painted wings in outline.
- Unique tie-downs, as ties are affixed to small Lightning-Struck pins on the drum head, then tied to the lugs.
- TVD insignia affixed inside, beneath which is an embedded emerald chip.
- Free beater
- The Sundial (10-inch diameter) on top of the stand is a lightweight wood, probably poplar (not readily identifiable when the piece was made), is hand-stained and hand painted with universal shamanic symbols:
- Oak tree with interwoven roots (Celtic)
- Oriental symbols for wood, fire, water and earth
- "Horned God of Les Trois Freres," from a French cave drawing believed to depict a Palaeolithic shaman
- African medicine mask
- Dancing shaman (from a drawing of Native American rock art)
- Engraved lion head disk (about 2 1/2-inches across) is surrounded by four serpents, each removable and able to reveal a variety of gemstones secreted within.
The Drum Stand
Locust tree stump (not lightning-struck), approx. 16 1/2-inches high (to top of Lion Disk) and 19-inches wide (at the widest point)- Inlaid, hand-dyed leather band to match the identical band on the drum
- Additional "treasure" of gemstones may be found in a medicine bag secreted in the stand's hollow opening inside of the stump
- Many natural "animal spirits" animate this mystical drum stand.

A Note About This Sacred Drum:
The Sun King is one of seven drums made from what I (and a friend, whose career as a woodcutter spanned 30 years) believe was a lightning-struck hickory tree on a mountaintop in West Virginia. (I made four others from the same tree, which are all now sold, including the Beaver Drum, shown below).
It took many months to prepare, create and unite this drum and its drum stand into a celebration of "The One Heart" which is a core principle of shamanism. I felt an urge to express this concept in the recognition that shamanism was and is practiced around the world and is present in the root of all cultures. In a larger sense, this duo is a complex representation of an elegant and simple premise: We are all One.
