The Only Drum
In Existence To Feature
Sacred Womb Lodges
(See Details Below)
The Bear Drum calls to the strength deep within your heart, to that fierce light of who you really are. For it is from that space that you can seek and express Truth, which are acts of love and courage that will illuminate the way ahead in service to the family of life. The rhythm of your heart, the sound of the drum, the heartbeat of the Earth Mother, these are the way to movement, to seeking, to healing, joy, peace and Love.
I understand that these are elusive in this sometimes troubled world. But they are not beyond your grasp.
Join together with those of like minds you know (up to six can play the drum at once), activate the Bear Drum’s sacred qualities, and fearlessly enter into the unknown while you unite in dance, service and healing. In this way, Spirit unfolds the truth of earth, air, fire and water, and for your hearts to ignite the light of a thousand suns.
"A new era of drum making has come to Thunder Valley Drums with the introduction of the Bear Drum, the first of many community or pow-wow type drums I will offer. Bear taught me how to make drums like this over a period of six beautiful years during journeys, or while I was working at the shop, and even in dreamtime. I now seek to honor this teacher with its namesake drum, the only one of its kind." --Bob
Introducing
Sacred Womb Lodges
A Sacred Concept Brought By Bear In Dreamtime
Enter into the sacred domain of spiritual connection and gratitude deep within the Bear Drum. Here you will find four
small womb-like compartments into which you can lodge seeds, stones, herbs, dry corn, flowers, and other special offerings to honor creation and all of life during ceremony. Note the totem carving between two of the lodges. (Photo taken before Drum Head was attached.)
Additional Features:
*
(Right) The Bear Drum was made from
crosscutting a very large Appalachian cherry tree that had completed its earth journey. Frame thickness varies from
1-2½ inches. Height ranges up to approximately eight inches.FIVE FEET in circumference (around)! * (LEFT) A Copper Hod hangs beneath the center of the drum to hold water, representing the "sacred center" as part of the Womb Lodge concept brought to me in the dreamtime by Bear.
* Four to Six People can comfortably play the Bear Drum.
*Includes Four 18-inch Solid Oak Drum Sticks (shown in main photo at top).
* (LEFT) Elk hide drum head, double tied to 16 solid oak pegs to help keep the Bear Drum's wonderful tone. A pure wool tiara is double-tied completely around the drum.
* (RIGHT) Four Exclusive Lightning-Struck Medallions with embedded raw Emeralds, heavy copper beads and antique Ethiopian copper beads honor the four sacred directions while providing spiritual protection for all who gather around the Bear Drum. These implements also serve as conductors and conduits for powerful healing energies associated with the Lightning people and their kin, the Thunderers. The spiritual expression then surges through the emeralds, symbolic of the heart connection, and into the healing circle.
* (LEFT) Gold ribbon and red cord braids hold ancient, fossilized sea animals around the Bear Drum's circumference and symbolically represent ancestral life emerging from the Earth Mother's womb.
*Includes an exclusive Thunder Valley Drums nameplate for the Bear Drum.
*Parts of the frame have been finished with a light, hand-rubbed coat of bee's wax and oil.
The Drum Stand:
(RIGHT) Solid Cedar Wood Drum Stand with hand-rubbed oil and beeswax finish, contains no nails or other metal, so is collapsible or can be completely disassembled for easy transport. Complete with solid oak pins, deer suede lacing and hand painted wooden beads.
Copper Hod hangs from the center.
Stand measures over two square feet when assembled.

As with most drums I make, this one had only just been separated from
the downed tree it was a part of when it spoke to me about its nature
and lineage. Clearly, its intentions were that it would become the Bear
Drum, for I envisioned a bear’s paw print on the drum face where bark
had been knocked off when the tree was felled. (The rest of the drum has
the bark intact.) Much later I would carve the likeness of that paw
print in the exact same spot I had seen on it then.
Bear simultaneously taught me many things on multiple levels while the two of us worked together on and off for over six years. Practically all that it taught me, though, came in the dreamtime. Bear is most active at night. I am sure you, too, will come to know these things—and more!— once you are with this magnificent teacher for a time.
Surprisingly, this Bear is not as introverted
as many believe its kin to be. Oh sure, it does have its affinity for “going in the
cave” or withdrawing, a tendency that is often interpreted by humans as
introspection. This is the metaphysical equivalent for the spiritual
seeker who ultimately will find the usefulness of discovering inner
strength and identity only by spending time in the silence afforded
“inside.”
Bear demonstrated this to me in a dream, which led to the
formation of the four “Sacred Womb Lodges” in the drum. These are
symbolic of two things, first that it is a spiritual principle among all
faiths and creeds to give thanks to that which sustains us. And by
placing herbs, seeds, stones and other items in each of the Lodges, you
are demonstrating your gratitude to All That Is. Secondly, the Lodges
are concealed and somewhat like a cave, where resides the true
potential of the seeds of your greatness and service. A separate but equally important part of this whole is the copper hod which hangs beneath the drum and functions to hold sacred water, the vital component of life and the source of spiritual cleansing for any ceremony.
And while we may think Bear prefers the confines of the cave, we learn from its example that the deep inner workings along a sacred path are always manifested
both inside and outside. On the Bear Drum, this is symbolized by four emeralds mounted on
Lightning-Struck cherry wood medallions and placed at each of the four sacred directions. This way, they serve as fierce protectors of the sacred space encompassing you, those who play the Bear Drum, and the drum itself, just as Bear is known to fiercely protect its own. But these beautiful emeralds, lightning-struck blocks and copper attachments also serve as conduits for the incredible healing energy available through the united intention of service to the greater good exhibited by those who join in playing the sacred drum. (You can read more about this concept here.)
The emeralds came from deep
within a Brazillian mine, a cave of sorts, and are raw, unpolished,
rough and natural.
Aren’t we all?
So the work of the path is always to go inside to seek answers and to
polish what will become the lustrous composition of our true identities as
servants of each other and all of life.
And once we find our strength, we step out into the grand journey, prepared to fully engage life and to search for the quintessential essence of what every living being yearns for, and
is willing to sacrifice its life for. And that is, to live free.
In practically all cultures, the Bear is a powerful symbol of this, of birth and rebirth, of creation in the face of extinction, of a stubborn light refusing to be overwhelmed by the darkness. We all carry Bear deep within.
